Walking on Cheshire’s Sandstone Trail

Cheshire's Sandstone Trail is one of the finest and most popular long distance paths in North West England.  For many, it’s the definitive Cheshire Way.  Tony Bowerman says it’s unmissable.

The Trail stretches for 34 miles / 55 kilometres from the ancient market town of Frodsham on the Mersey estuary in the north, to Georgian Whitchurch in rural north Shropshire in the south.

It offers superb, unbroken, and often elevated walking across the still largely green and pleasant English county of Cheshire and northern Shropshire.
High on the Sandstone Trail

High ground has always been a magnet to walkers, and for most of the way the Sandstone Trail follows the dramatic, wooded sandstone ridge that runs roughly top to bottom across the Cheshire Plain.

With its beautiful scenery and broad, ever-changing panoramas, the Sandstone Trail is an invigorating walk at any time of year. It’s a popular and well signposted and waymarked route that cries out to be walked. Look out for the distinctive Sandstone Trail logo of a black boot with the letter ‘S’ in its centre, surrounded by a yellow circle.

Along the way the Trail passes through the sun-dappled woodland paths in vast and ancient Delamere Forest, before running past the charming settlements at Kelsall and Tarporley to ruined medieval Beeston Castle high on its isolated crag.

On the wooded hills opposite sits stately Peckforton Castle — a perfect, Grade I listed Victorian copy of a Norman fortress that’s now a luxurious hotel and restaurant.
Further south, the Trail runs through the rural Peckforton Estate and over the National Trust’s iconic heather and bilberry dominated hills at Bulkeley and Bickerton.

The views stretch both west across the Dee Valley to the Welsh Hills and mountains of Snowdonia, and east to the Pennines and the Peak District.

By common consensus, it's one of the loveliest parts of Cheshire, traversed by one of its finest footpaths.
