Route Directions

  • Park in the main car park at Rother Valley Country Park and take a moment to walk over to the lakes to admire the wildlife.

  • When you're ready, walk away from the lakes to the direction of entrance to the car park you've just driven through.

  • The various shops and cafe at Bedgreave Mill are on the right here.

  • Once you've walked out of the car park, turn right, and then left to cross the bridge over the River Rother.

  • At the junction - with the sign for many paths - turn left to walk along Pit House Lane.

  • Soon, the lane reaches a gate fence, where it becomes the vehicle-free part of the Trans Pennine Trail (TPT).

  • Follow the TPT, remembering it is also a cycle and horse riding track too.

  • The wood on the right is Wales Wood.

  • After a while, the TPT splits, with a path heading over the fine bridge on the left.  For our walk, carry straight on along the main TPT route.

  • As the TPT turns to the left, it starts to get a little bit boggy... so take care around here.

  • The TPT takes a hard left turn to cross the River Rother over a fairly narrow bridge.

  • There's a path which heads back towards the lakes on the left, but turn right to follow the TPT over the bridge across the first set of railway lines.

  • At the other side, walk carefully across the entrance to the works using the clearly marked path, and carry on over the second railway bridge.

  • Once over the second railway bridge, turn left and follow the tree-lined path with the railway on your left side.

  • The TPT eventually turns left - follow it as it goes over the railway once more, and then underneath an old railway bridge, to reach the lake.

  • You're back into Rother Valley Country Park now, and turn right to follow the walk around the main lake.

  • The clearly marked paths and signs take you past the cycle hire shop and back to the car park.
