Our Top 5 Children's Jackets

Here's our selection of the Top 5 Children's Jackets at the moment.

As with most outdoor kit, walking trousers have more than their fare share of technical phrases and acronyms - one to watch for here is DWR - or Durable Water Repellency - which is a waterproofing treatment sprayed onto the outer layer of the fabric.  As the full name suggests, it's not waterproof in itself, but does reduce the amount of water going through the fabric.  If you'd like any help with what to look for in a pair of walking trousers, then click here for our guide.

As we get to see new kit, we'll be updating this page, so keep popping back to stay up-to-date with our selection.

Regatta Kids Hydronic II Hooded Stretch Softshell Jacket

Hurry... because this is a great offer and at this price, the Hydronic II won't be around for long...

The kids' Hydronic II Hooded Softshell Jacket uses a stretchy, windproof Softshell fabric with a Durable Water Repellent finish to allow that rain to bead straight off the fabric.  The elasticated hood with chin guard provides superb coverage.  Stretch binding at the cuffs and hem deliver a sleek fit that seals in the warmth.  With zipped side pockets, reflective trim for low light exploring.

One of the three colour styles available should appeal to either girls or boys - and either one are available at the moment at this great price...

ISBJÖRN Rib Sweater Jr

There's one big problem with this fleece jacket from ISBJÖRN... they don't make it in an adult's' size!  That's because Swedish company ISBJÖRN are exclusively for kids, and their focus really shows with the Rib.  It's a lovely jacket most kids would love to have.

Firstly, it just looks the part.  The five available colours should cover all preferences, and they are different enough for a son and daughter to be happy to wear the same jacket in different colours.  Detailing around the seams, pockets and zip are attractive but also functional - and the belly pockets are "really cool" says our tester Olivia!

Secondly, the Rib is made from a two-tone soft fleece knitted fabric, meaning it is light but incredibly warm.  It can easily become the jacket of choice for all occasions, and is light enough to be carried in the backpack just in case.  It's not waterproof, but it doesn't pretend to be - it's for keeping your young ones warm and toasty, and it does that fantastically and with great style.

ISBJÖRN STORM Hard Shell Jacket

ISBJÖRN's STORM hard Shell Jacket is an excellent choice to keep your little ones warm and dry all year round.  It features a detachable hood, a waterproof front zipper, two chest pockets and is adjustable in the hem.  The curved sleeves allow for full movement, and a soft cuff in the sleeve ending makes it stay in place.  The sleeve also has a "Grow Cuff", which when released makes the sleeve 3 cm longer - ideal for making it last longer to fit a growning kid!

It's made out of a 2-Layer material, with a membrane providing a hydrostatic head of 15,000 mm - so water isn't going to seap in, especially as it is 100% seam sealed and features waterproof zippers.  Last but not least, the water repellant finish (DWR) is always 100% flourcarbon free.

Here's one jacket you can buy that does the job and is environmentally friendly too.

Craghoppers Girls Romy Jacket

One of Craghoppers' new jackets for the autumn/winter season, the Romy is super lightweight - being only 375 grams, whilst at the same time being super warm.  This is thanks to it having ClimaPlus, which has down-like insulating properties but is compact and quick-drying.

So it's warm inside, and with the DWR finish, it is water resistant and windproof.  Thankfully, the Romy is also easy to wash and dry - so great to wear for any outdoors adventures.  The waist is part elasticated for a better fit, and the hood has an elasticated bound face too.  Our young tester found the mock belt with branded metal buckle quite stylish...

Perfect to wrap up in the cold weather, but not too bulky to be put insiide a backpack when the young ladies get too warm.

Kids Bear Grylls Core SoftShell Jacket

If your little one won't wear a regular jacket, then try this softshell - especially if they are one of the many fans of Mr Grylls.  This is from Craghoppers' Bear Grylls range, and seeing as though many kids like logos, the prominant "BG" might be useful here.

Technically, it's a rather good jacket... weather resilent are the buzz words here, so it provides some protection against the cold and rain, but not for too long.  Us parents will appreciate the easy care washing ability and its fast drying time too.

It's currently on sale at Go Outdoors, with limited availablity on sizes...
